Exam Navigation & Tools
During an exam, effective navigation helps you manage your time and ensure you answer every question. BeamEdUp provides a question palette, navigation buttons, a review/flag system, and a countdown timer to keep you on track.
Question Palette
The question palette appears as a fixed panel on the right side of the exam interface (300px wide). It shows a numbered grid of all questions with color-coded indicators for each question's state. Click any number to jump directly to that question.
| Field | Required | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|---|
Current | Optional | highlighted | The question you are currently viewing, shown with a distinct highlight. |
Answered | Optional | filled | Questions where you have selected or typed an answer. Shown as filled/colored circles. |
Unanswered | Optional | empty | Questions you have not yet answered. Shown as empty/outlined circles. |
Marked for Review | Optional | flagged | Questions you have flagged with the "Mark for Review" button. Shown in orange so you can return to them before submitting. |
Navigation Buttons
Below the question card, navigation buttons let you move between questions sequentially:
- Previous — Moves to the prior question. Disabled on the first question.
- Next — Moves to the next question. Appears for all questions except the last.
- Submit Exam — Replaces the Next button on the last question. Opens the submission confirmation modal.
Your answer is automatically saved when you navigate away from a question — there is no need to explicitly save before moving on.
Mark for Review
The Mark for Review button (bookmark icon) lets you flag any question you want to revisit before submitting. Flagged questions appear in orange on the question palette. Click the button again to unmark a question. Marking for review does not affect your answer — it is purely a visual reminder.
Countdown Timer
The exam timer appears in the sticky header bar and counts down from the configured exam duration. The timer is initialized when the attempt starts and persists across page navigation within the exam.
- When time reaches zero, the exam is automatically submitted with your current answers
- A notification alerts you when auto-submission occurs due to time expiry
- The
timeRemainingfield from the server ensures the timer is accurate even if you close and reopen the browser
Proctoring Indicators
If the exam has proctoring enabled, additional indicators appear in the exam interface:
- Camera Feed — A small webcam preview in the corner when camera monitoring is active
- Violation Warning Banner — Shows your current violation count and the threshold for auto-submission
- Action Blocked Notifications — Pop-up alerts when restricted actions (copy-paste, right-click, tab switching) are detected
